Breakups And Divorces Among The Famous
When average citizens get divorced, the public at large remains relatively unaware. Friends and family are notified, but complete strangers usually don’t know unless you tell them. Unfortunately, that is not the case with celebrities. Breakups and divorces among the famous are often widely publicized, with the public often taking sides in the situation.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are no exception. In a story first reported by gossip website and TV show TMZ, Amber Heard filed for divorce on May 23, just three days after the death of Depp’s mother.
Heard and Depp met one another on the set of the 2011 movie The Rum Diary. The couple seemed happy and in February of last year, the couple married. A private legal ceremony took place at Depp’s Los Angeles home followed by a second private ceremony on an island in the Bahamas.
In the divorce documents, Heard cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the divorce petition. She is also seeking spousal support. Heard also claimed spousal abuse in the divorce petition. She alleged that she was abused by Depp throughout their 15-month long marriage.
On May 25, Depp’s attorney, Laura Wasser, filed a response to Heard’s petition, asking that the judge deny her request for support and said that Heard’s filing was financially motivated. There was no prenuptial agreement between the couple, which may complicate Depp’s request.
The application for the restraining order alleges that Depp was physically and verbally abusive throughout the couple’s four-year relationship. Heard also alleged that Depp suffers from a substance abuse problem. As evidence, Heard cited an incident on May 21 when she says Depp argued with her and hit her in the head with a cell phone. Photos emerged showing Heard with a bruised cheek. She submitted those photos and photos of the damage in her apartment as part of the application.
However, a spokesperson for the LAPD familiar with the incident said that they saw no evidence of a crime and Heard declined to file charges at that time. When police arrived, Depp had already left the apartment. Heard’s attorney explained that she declined to file charges against Depp in the May 21 incident in order to “protect her privacy and Depp’s career.”
Despite this, a temporary domestic violence restraining order was granted to Heard. Depp was ordered by the judge to stay 100 feet away from Heard and granted her sole use of their Los Angeles apartment. The judge, however, denied temporary spousal support. The judge also declined to issue an order to stay away from Heard’s dog, Pistol. For now, Depp has declined to comment on the allegations other than stating that they are false.
Fame may change the amount of publicity your private life receives, and it can reveal your financial situation as well. Gossip magazines get much of their information from public records. We should never forget that people who are famous and rich are still people. Obviously, Heard believes that she is in danger and she has every right to seek a restraining order. It doesn’t matter if her husband is a famous actor. The law is the law.
